Arya Vaidya Nilayam

Arya Vaidya Nilayam

Arya Vaidya Nilayam is a 76 year old Ayurvedic organisation based at Madurai in South India. Founded by Arya Vaidyan N. Rama Varier in 1930, from its humble beginning, AVN has grown into one of the most modern research based Ayurvedic institutions in India. A manufacturing division with a capacity of 800 tons per annum well backed by a state of the art R & D division makes AVN a very strong presence in the Indian Ayurvedic industry.

The Founder – Arya Vaidyan N. Rama Varier

Arya Vaidyan N. Rama Varier was a Keralite who had his Ayurvedic education at the Kottakkal Aryavaidya Pathasala under Vaidyaratnam P. S. Varier. He started his professional life in his home town in Kerala itself but later on resettled to Madurai in 1930. In the first few decades of its history, AVN was more of an Ayurvedic clinic with limited manufacturing facility to cater to the requirements of the patients visiting the clinic. The illustrious Arya Vaidyan N. Rama Varier established himself as a practitioner of authentic Ayurveda in Madurai. In 1954 AVN established a small factory and in 1964 a full fledged Ayurveda Clinic was established in Town Hall Road, Madurai.

Arya Vaidyan P. V. Raghava Varier

After the demise of Arya Vaidyan N. Rama Varier, Arya Vaidyan P. V. Raghava Varier took over the responsibility as the Chief Physician and Chairman of Arya Vaidya Nilayam. His vision and guidance helped AVN to establish itself as a major presence in the Ayurvedic community. The organization celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1980 and initiated many developmental activities with it. Modernization and mechanization of the factory and the opening up of Aswini Bhavan, the AVN hospital in Madurai were the major events that followed.

Current Management Team and Focus on R & D

Dr. Ramesh R. Varier is the current Managing Director of Arya Vaidya Nilayam with Dr. Rajeev C Warrier and Dr. Sridevi Rajeev as the Medical Directors. By the Nineties, AVN realized that the future requires the integration of modern technology and research methods into the classical wisdom of Ayurveda. The development of Special Products for particular disorders commenced in the early Nineties and in 1996, AVN launched its first range of Special Products. The factory also was modernized to facilitate the manufacturing of these products.

GMP Certification

In 1999, AVN received the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certification in recognition of its commitment towards quality and safety of its products. AVN is continuously upgrading its facilities to facilitate the production of its new generation Ayurvedic products.

Kashayam Tablets – AVN’s Contribution to Ayurveda

Another major milestone in the history of AVN, the launching of Kashayam Tablets also was in 2000. This was a very radical step from Arya Vaidya Nilayam and the concept was unheard of in the Ayurvedic community till then. By converting Kashayams into Tablets, AVN achieved the twin aims of offering better palatability and dosage convenience. This breakthrough was the result of almost a decade long hard work of the R & D division, but the Ayurvedic world was very sceptical initially with this new approach. It took some three years for the society to completely digest the concept of Kashayam Tablets but now the name AVN is almost synonymous with Kashayam Tablets. The grand success of KashayamTablets encouraged the R & D team to come up with new products and now every year, AVN is launching around 5 new products to cater to the health care needs of the society.

Expansion of Manufacturing Facilities

The increasing demand from the market resulted in AVN expanding its manufacturing facilities to upgrade itself to meet the W.H.O. Good Manufacturing Practice standards in 2001. The factory is under another massive expansion process and by the middle of 2007, once the works are completed, AVN will be able to double its existing manufacturing capacity of 800 tons.

AVN Arogya Hospitals and Clinics

AVN Arogya Hospitals and Clinics of Arya Vaidya Nilayam offer authentic Ayurvedic services to meet the health care requirements of the 21st century. Aswini Bhavan, the AVN Arogya Hospital in Madurai is a fine example of the successful amalgamation of Modern Medicine with Classical Ayurveda. The experienced Ayurveda Doctors in AVN team up with a Senior Neurologist in offering the best healthcare facilities for the patients. AVN Arogya has Treatment Centres and Clinics in Madurai, Mumbai, Chennai and Vellore. International operations of AVN Arogya will commence with the launching of AVN Ayurvedic Centre in the Kingdom of Bahrain shortly.

Charitable Hospital

Arya Vaidya Nilayam is running a charitable hospital under the Arya Vaidyan N. Rama Varier Foundation in Madurai to meet the healthcare requirements of the poor and needy. Expert consultation and medicines are provided free of cost to the patients who visit the hospital.

R & D Division

The Research & Development wing of AVN is about to get a big boost with the new state of the art laboratory that will be inaugurated in early 2007. The R & D division has its pipeline full with formulations under various stages of development. Two new products for cardiovascular and diabetic care are about to be launched. AVN is also collaborating with Hospitals and Research Centres in India and abroad for clinical trails and for training its scientists.
